Program Overview
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) invites applications for its Undergraduate Scholarship 2027, a prestigious and fully funded opportunity for international students to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Japan.

Study Structure & Preparatory Year
All selected candidates will first enroll in a one-year preparatory program assigned by MEXT. This includes:
- Japanese language training (mandatory)
- Academic subjects based on specialization:
- Social Sciences & Humanities: Japanese affairs, Mathematics, English, Social Studies
- Natural Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology
After successfully completing this phase and passing required examinations, students will proceed to a Japanese university. Final university placement is determined by MEXT based on academic performance, chosen field, and seat availability.
Scholarship Benefits
The MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship provides comprehensive support, including:
- Monthly Allowance: ¥117,000
- Additional Regional Allowance: ¥2,000–¥3,000 (for designated areas)
- Full Tuition Coverage: Including entrance examination and university fees
- Travel Expenses: Round-trip airfare (as per MEXT regulations)
- Accommodation: University residence halls may be available under certain conditions
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
- Be born on or after April 2, 2002
- Have completed 12 years of education (or equivalent) outside Japan
- Be willing to learn Japanese and pursue studies in Japanese
- Be physically and mentally fit (medical certificate required)
- Arrive in Japan between April 1–7, 2027
- Obtain a valid Student visa prior to arrival
Ineligible Applicants
Applicants are not eligible if they:
- Are military personnel or affiliated civilians
- Have previously received a MEXT scholarship
- Are currently enrolled in a Japanese institution under a student visa
- Are applying for multiple MEXT programs simultaneously
- Plan to receive another scholarship during the same period
- Fail to arrive in Japan within the specified timeframe
- Are found guilty of misconduct during the selection process
Application Process
- Submit application documents to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country
- Undergo the First Screening, which includes:
- Document evaluation
- Written examinations
- Interview
- Successful candidates are recommended to MEXT
- Final selection is conducted by MEXT in Japan
- Selected applicants receive official notification
